Our Mission at Madurai

At Madurai, the Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo are committed to reaching out to the poor and marginalized through education and community empowerment. Guided by our charism and inspired by Gospel values, we work among economically disadvantaged families, striving to create opportunities that lead to dignity, self-reliance, and holistic development.

Education of poor children is at the heart of our ministry. Through our schools, we provide quality education to children from underprivileged backgrounds, enabling them to grow in knowledge, values, and confidence. Special care and encouragement are given to first-generation learners, helping them overcome social and economic barriers and build a hopeful future.

Alongside education, we focus on the empowerment of women. Through tailoring and skill-training programmes, women are equipped with practical skills that enable them to earn a livelihood and support their families. These initiatives foster self-confidence, financial independence, and a sense of responsibility within the household and the wider community.

We also promote and accompany Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across the surrounding villages of Madurai. Through these groups, women are encouraged to save regularly, access small loans, and support one another in times of need. SHGs have become platforms for mutual support, leadership development, and collective growth, strengthening families and village communities.

Through education, women empowerment, and community organization, the Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo continue their mission in Madurai with compassion and commitment—walking alongside the poor and working towards a more just, inclusive, and hope-filled society.
